Ink Coffee: Gentrification Sign
A seemingly innocuous sign outside of a Denver coffee shop sparked a nationwide outcry. The sign outside the cafe proclaimed, “Happily gentrifying the neighborhood since 2014”, though little thought was put into its implications.
By gentrifying the area, Ink Coffee unintentionally displaced many of the lower-income minorities living there and it wasn’t long before crowds of protestors descended upon the shop in protest. Vandalism soon followed, reinforcing the message that this type of gentrification is not welcome.
The lesson? Consider all angles before publishing content. Be empathetic, humble and culturally aware. Don’t publish in a rush. It can lead to unexpected consequences.
